Detroit Techno artist Carl Craig assembles a team of keyboardists and a large collection of synthesizers to present a symphonic reimagining of his dancefloor productions for three dates in London, Berlin, and Brugges.
An ambitious project from American DJ, producer, and Grammy-nominated composer Carl Craig, arrives in Europe in April 2018. In Synthesizer Ensemble Craig’s techno tracks have been adapted to a symphonic language with the assistance of his collaborator, experimental pianist, and composer Francesco Tristano. This project, some ten years in the making, is performed live by a group of musicians, including pianist Kevin Sholar, across an array of keyboards and synthesizers, with Jon Dixon, Joel Holmes, Greg Burk, and Christoph Adams.
Since his first release in 1989, Carl Craig has become one of Detroit’s most notable techno DJ talents, with a career reaching far beyond his native American hometown and on to global recognition with his DJ sets, live performances, and productions. He created his own label Planet E Communications in 1991 and has most recently helmed the Detroit Love events all across the globe. Hugely prolific, he released the Versus album on Planet E/Infine last year and is continually adding to a list of remixes for other artists, extending to over 100 cuts for the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, and Pet Shop Boys; his 2008 remix for Junior Boys’ Like A Child earned him a Grammy award nomination.
The Synthesiser Ensemble project has its roots in a 2008 Paris concert, where Craig collaborated with Dub Techno innovator and multi-instrumentalist Moritz von Oswald – who Craig calls the ‘spiritual advisor’ to Versus. Together, they made ReComposed with the help of Tristano on keys, beginning Craig’s partnership with the composer. The upcoming concerts (of which this run of three is just the beginning) sees the realization of a project that’s almost a decade in the making – an exploration of the vast symphonic potential of modern electronic music.
