[SRB] Jan Blomqvist nije imao lak put do svoje karijere.
[ENG] Jan Blomqvist didn’t have an easy way through his career. From bartender to LIVE virtuoso, this artist from Berlin went through the thorny way. We managed to get him in the pause between the gigs and before of his performance in Belgrade where he will on 13th of April present his unreleased tracks.
[SRB] 1. Ko je Jan LIVE i ko je Jan u klubu?
[SRB] 1. To čini celo iskustvino intenzivnijim. 🙂
[ENG] Hello Jan, We are glad that you are coming to Belgrade. Everybody is so excited about this event and we want to thank you for making time for answering to us in this interview.
[ENG] 1. Who is Jan LIVE and Jan in the club?
If this is a question about the difference between me playing alone or with the band, I would answer: With my band, every instrument is played live. This needs practice and gives less room for improvisation. When I’m alone, I obviously can’t play every instrument myself, so I play with Ableton live, using samples. In the club, by myself, I’m much closer to the audience and can more easily catch the vibe on the dancefloor and react to it. This makes it an intense experience. A bit more intense than the structured live gig with the band. But all in all, Jan LIVE and Jan in the club is kind of the same: My music is played live both times just in a slightly different way. What I need to add: I don’t DJ. Like ever. 🙂
[SRB] 2.
[ENG] 2. Is it true that you never cried as a kid, only sang?
This is from a biography of mine that was out there for some time. It was actually
meant as a joke, a caricature of the cliché musician’s biography. Anyway, there is
a grain of truth in it. I’m often told by my parents that I sang a lot as a child. Even
before I could properly talk, often waking them at 6 in the morning by singing
in bed.
[SRB] 3.
[ENG] 3. What’s the difference in workflow of making a track in the band and as a solo
producer/DJ?
[ENG] 3. There actually is no difference between the two. The songs are written by me and my pianist in the studio and are just differently realized on stage whether I’m
playing alone or with the band. It’s the same music, the same tracks. With the
band, we have the possibility to play tracks in a different way, to experiment with
speed, with breaks, with my voice. That’s not possible on the dance floor of a club
where the music needs to be on point and – bam – makes people dance.
120-124BPM is the rule for that.
[SRB] 4. Ti si eksplodirao oko 2011. i kasnije sarađivao sa Oliverom Koletzkim – kako je došlo do toga?
[SRB] 4. 🙂
[ENG] 4. You exploded around 2011. and later collaborated with Oliver Koletzki. How that happened?
[ENG] 4. Me and Oli met in 2008 at an after hour at my place. We were young and still did these things back then. 🙂 He really liked my music and wanted to release it. But I wasn’t ready back then, wasn’t satisfied with the tracks yet. 3 years later we got together again, got along great and started working together. He wanted my vocals on his album. That the track with my vocals was then chosen to be the first single on Großstadtmädchen 2 was great for me and him. We are still friends and I would actually love to work with him again although we have musically moved in slightly different directions since our collaboration. So, Oli, if you are reading this: Let’s work together again. 🙂
[SRB] 5.
[ENG] 5. You recently released „Winter Roads“ – can you tell us the story behind that track and what’s coming next?
[ENG] 5. The story of Winter Roads started when I was asked to rewrite Vivaldi’s Winter of the Four Seasons. We liked the baseline of the Vivaldi track so much that we decided to work with it some more. The result is the Winter Roads track. Because it’s so dark and winter was approaching, we decided to release it immediately. Even before the album that we have been working on for 2 years now. We are almost done with it by now. The name of the album is Disconnected. Our plan is to have four releases in 2018. 3 EPs with 3 tracks over the summer, followed by the album in September. The tracks were recorded in four different locations: in Berlin, on Iceland, in New York, and in California. I’m actually answering these questions at a studio in the Joshua National Tree Park while having a break from recording.
[SRB] 6.
I ako imaš nekad konflikt, moraš da budeš egoističan.
[ENG] 6. What’s the best advice you ever received when it was tough for you?
[ENG] 6. The best advice I ever got is that you have to trust in yourself and stay true to who you are because in the end, only you know what makes you happy. I’ve heard this quite often actually, but it’s still true. If you stop being authentic and try to be someone else, people stop taking you seriously. In general but also on stage. Maybe this is not true for other parts of the music business. In pop music, it might be important to even play with roles. In the little niche me and my music are living in, my experience is that people give you credit if you have done the work yourself and wholeheartedly stand behind what you do. This also means that if you don’t like a song anymore, you stop playing it. And, if there’s a conflict, you sometimes have to be egoistic.
[SRB] 7.
[ENG] 7. For the end tell us what can Belgrade people expect from you on 13th of April
2018?
[ENG] 7. Me and my band will play a lot of new unreleased tracks! I started to play them during solo gigs already, but the Belgrade show will be the first time that the band will perform them on stage. The show will be kind of like an advanced album tour gig. Exciting! 🙂
